When soon-to-be-renowned Boston hip-hop duo 7L & Esoteric collaborated with the Wu-Tang Clans Inspectah Deck on the title track to 7LESs debut EP Speaking Real Words in 1999, the timing was perfect. The upstart duo was building a serious buzz on the East Coast and beyond, while Deck was still winning praise for his gold-selling solo disc Uncontrolled Substance. As flashy pop-oriented rap was pumped on commercial radio stations, their natural chemistry and simpatico skills shone as a beacon to real hip-hop fans, a base of listeners who were soon asking about their next musical summit. 14 years later, the hunger for sharp lyrics and head-snapping beats hasnt dissipated. In the face of the ever-worsening status quo of watered-down and vapid radio rap songs, the call for something real has only gotten stronger, and once again the time is right for a call to action – for someone or something to come in and send wack rappers running for the hills in fear. Enter CZARFACE, the upcoming, uncompromising full-length album from Inspectah Deck and 7L & Esoteric. Not surprising, respect for real hip-hop runs deep, and CZARFACE brings an army with it - consider the star-studded guest list which includes Roc Marciano, Action Bronson, Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks,)Oh No (Gangrene,) Mr. MFN eXquire and Decks fellow Wu-Tang Clansmen Ghostface Killah and Cappadonna. Aside from one track blessed by the almighty DJ Premier, production on CZARFACE belongs exclusively to DJ 7L, who provides the musical backbone which holds the album together. The soon-to-be acclaimed group found out quickly that there was a groundswell of hip-hop fanatics thirsting for the lunchpail, lyrics-above-all-else rap they fell in love with in the 90s. After an extended stint as the house band at Tijuana strip joint Fantasitas, Los Dug Dugs relocated to Mexico City in 1966. They quickly garnered a rabid fan following there, which resulted in the Dug Dugs signing to RCA Records and cutting a series of singles (the band also headlined a pair of 1967 films, El Mundo Loco de los Jovenes and Cinco de Chocolate y Una de Fresa). Upon returning to Tijuana in 1968, Los Dug Dugs took up residence at the popular Sans Sous Ci club. An American tourist was so impressed that he offered to bankroll a trip for the band to New York City. The group played a handful of live dates and recorded a few demos, but having no money to pay the union fees necessary to earn them the opportunity to play NYCs larger venues left them with little choice but to return to Mexico. Los Dug Dugs immediately began work on their first LP for RCA Mexico, little knowing at the time that it would become a classic of psychedelia. Long-simmering creative differences between band leaders Nava and Jorge de la Torre forced the latters resignation after the album was completed; by the time the resulting psychedelic opus appeared in 1971, the first incarnation of Los Dug Dugs was essentially no more. Over more than a decade, with each new album or devastating verse, the two New England hip hop heavyweights have continually raised the stakes, providing each other the fuel to push their lyrical intensity and creative output to new heights. As individuals, they helped spark a renaissance of classic East Coast hardcore rap; as a team, joining forces for the long-awaited full-length collaboration LP Anti-Hero this fall, they are cementing their status as battle-tested kings of the underground.

Backed by an all-star roster of veteran producers and guest emcees, Slaine and Termanology have created an album that distills their distinct talents and points of view into a cohesive artistic vision that is sure to become an instant classic. Moving comfortably from swaggering showcases of lyrical prowess to highly personal and evocative songwriting, Anti-Hero proves that, even after all these years, Slaine and Term are still pushing each other to grow stronger.

Weve grown a lot in the past five or ten years, as far as learning the business, becoming a man and handling responsibilities, says Term, reflecting on the 20-plus years the pair have collectively spent in the rap game. If you took it back to 2005, Im sure me and Slaine were more reckless.

Slaine puts their past relationship in more stark terms: We were rivals, he says. At the time, Slaine was making his mark as a young, Boston-bred verbal brawler with a raw, uncompromising and darkly funny rap style fueled by personal experience. Meanwhile, Term was a slick-mouthed kid from Lawrence, Massachusetts, armed with a lethal, breathless flow that didnt so much ride over beats as blow them to pieces. When I started buzzing, [Term] was coming up at the same time, remembers Slaine. I viewed him as competition.

For such a monumental teaming, Term and Slaine both knew they couldnt simply go through the motions. Instead, they embraced the challenge of finding a solid middle ground: Term amped up his lyrical intensity towards hardcore rhymes, while Slaine adapted his style to fit the soulful boom-bap production that his partner favored on his works. Over a period of over four years working together in the studio, they began to craft a new sound. Doing a record with Slaine, Im thinking like this is hardcore, raw, shock rap, says Term. I wanted to make it so that Slaines fans could feel me as well.

Anti-Hero contains some of the most personal and unflinchingly honest songs in either emcees lengthy catalog. Halfway through the recording of the album, Slaine faced up to his struggles with substance abuse and got sober. Suddenly, for him at least, late night recording parties fueled by booze were replaced by sharply focused early morning sessions powered by cups of coffee. Its two different Slaines that I worked with on this project, said Term.

Yet through all the ups and downs in Slaine and Termanologys careers, one thing remains consistent: whether separately or together, these two anti-heroes will never let the other one catch them slipping.

We are always going to push each other, says Slaine. The book itself brilliantly captured McLuhan's theories on media and technology, arguing that the medium by which information is transferred to people was more important the the actual content being relayed. McLuhan hoped that an audio recording would help give greater depth to his theories, and in the late 1960s, he and producer John Simon went to work on a record of the same name. Using audio clips of McLuhan speaking, often interrupted by discordant sounds and other voices interjecting, they created a thought-provoking, sometimes whimsical patchwork of sounds and ideas that illustrated the complex relationship between people, media and technology. Over 40 years since its release, The Medium is the Massage continues to challenge listeners to think about media and communications in new ways. Magic Mike made his debut in the world of Miami Bass when he met Miami based producer/rapper Rod Whitehead (of Pryme Tyme fame) in 1986. Rod enlisted Mike as a DJ for his upcoming projects on Miami’s Suntown Records, but on reviewing the details of the deal Mike took a pass. Shortly after he received a call from Beatmaster Clay D to add cuts on an upcoming project for rappers MC Cool Rock and MC Chaszey Chess. This resulted in his first recorded work, “Boot the Booty”. After realizing his back-breaking work for Clay D and Vision Records was not getting him the money or fame he deserved, he returned to Orlando and landed a solo deal with the then unknown Cheetah Records, releasing his first batch of solo singles in
1988. Those led to a full-length album in 1989 entitled “DJ Magic Mike and The Royal Posse”, which featured many guest crews and rappers all based on his production and turntable antics. His following album “Bass is the Name of the Game” in 1990 saw the Miami Bass genre reach a zenith both creatively and commercially. Though much like most other Miami Bass producers, Magic Mike’s music was never exclusively Miami Bass, but also aimed for the traditional Hip-Hop market. 17 years and another 6 full lengths later and Traffic Ent. in conjunction with Warlock Records are proud to present... “Bass Head”.
