The album was a welcome return to provocative and often radically political rhetoric that hearkened back to hip-hop forebears including The Coup, Public Enemy and KRS-One (as well as poetic descendants like the Last Poets and Watts Prophets).

Let's Get Free was critically acclaimed and benefited from multiple singles, including the infectious, thick analog drive of Hip-Hop (which became the de facto theme song for Chappelle's Show); Its Bigger Than Hip-Hop, with a remix co-produced by a young Kanye West; Mind Sex (with Abiodun Oyewole of the Last Poets), and the poignant Im An African. But the singles weren't the only worthy songs, as just about every cut here has deeper meaning than most full albums by their early 2000s peers. Highlights: the thought-provoking, anti-drug album opener Wolves; We Want Freedom (co-produced by frequent collaborator Hedrush); They Schools and Propaganda (co-produced by Lord Jamar, one of five songs he assisted on).

All in all, this is one of the more underrated and possibly Top 5 fully-realized political hip-hop albums of all time. When his debut album hit in mid-1989, The D.O.C. was in the vortex of the biggest hip-hop happening on the planet: the rise and rule of N.W.A. The groups breakout album Straight Outta Compton had hit one year prior and had created both controversy and worldwide critical acclaim.

As rap history buffs and industry insiders know, The D.O.C. was a crucial behind-the-scenes member of the N.W.A. inner circle – his most important role in the early days of the group, besides his close working relationship with Dr. Dre, was writing many of Eazy-E's rhymes, including his hit 1988 single We Want Eazy. He would go on to write for Efli4zaggin, The Chronic and Doggystyle. The D.O.C originally from Dallas, Texas started his career in the Fila Fresh Crew and was featured on N.W.A and The Posse.

But The D.O.C. wasnt in N.W.A. and never wanted to be – he was his own man, with his own vision. And after Compton proceeded to blow up (much like Eazy's 1988 LP, Eazy-Duz-It), the next crew album was No One Can Do It Better. Significantly, it was the first album where Dr. Dre showed his greatness as a solo producer for one MC. And the Dallas-born D.O.C. lived up to the challenge of Dre's funky, expertly-produced tracks by bringing his A-game on the mic.

Boasting four singles – The D.O.C. and the Doctor; Mind Blowin; the smash It's Funky Enough; and The Formula – the album is flawless from beginning to end. Ren and Eazy-E would rhyme on a track together.

Skillfully rhyming over both fast and slow tracks, The D.O.C. showed on this amazing record that he was one of hip-hops most talented MCs, especially on the West Coast scene. He nearly died in a horrific car crash as the album was catching fire in the late summer of 1989 which damaged his vocal cords, but he survived and continues to make new music and act as a sounding board for Dr. Dre to this day. More recently a documentary covering D.O.C.'s life titled The DOC debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival last year with fans eagerly awaiting a wider release. A founding member of the trio, (Alongside rappers T3 and Baatin) Dilla provided the groups distinctly esoteric, free-wheeling sound, built around winding basslines, quirky drumbeats, subtle low-end frequencies, and classic jazz & soul samples. Against the backdrop of Dillas rich production, T3 and Baatins free-flowing style of rhyming would also earn wide critical praise, leading to comparisons as the successors to A Tribe Called Quest. But hear us out as we plead the case for this amazing LP. By 1988 there was a lot more competition in the rap game – Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B. & Rakim, Ice-T and many more had given Hollis, Queens prodigal sons lots of competition. But Joe, Darryl and Jay were still at the top of their game, and hip-hop fans should never let this classic – chiefly produced by their Queens neighbor, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Davy D[MX] – get lost in their crates.

For starters, the albums first single, Runs House b/w Beats To The Rhyme is arguably the most powerful one-two punch of the trios career, showing contenders to the rap throne that they could still destroy a beat, tag-teaming with power at any speed. Not to be lost in the shuffle, fans were also reminded on both sides that Jam-Master Jay remained one of the worlds best DJs, flexing the pinnacle of what would be called turntablism a decade later. Both songs show a musical telepathy between all three that has rarely been equaled.

The second single, Mary, Mary, driven by an infectious Monkees sample, took a different approach, shrewdly ensuring that pop fans who jumped on the Raising Hell bandwagon had something to chew on. But, like Walk This Way, the song wasnt just bubblegum – there was an edge to it, and the lyrical gymnastics were very real. It wasnt selling out, it was allowing fans to buy in. Papa Crazy, driven in concept and by a sample from the Temptations Papa Was A Rolling Stone, followed a similar pop-leaning path.

Overall, the lyrical content on the album was a step up from the groups first three LPs. Its easy to infer, looking back, that they were feeling the heat from their younger competitors in the rap game. The genre was changing fast, and they were up to the challenge. On cuts like Radio Station they bring substance to the grooves, by attacking Black Radio for its continual denigration of rap. Tougher Than Leather reminds the world that they were still the Kings of Rock, with hard guitars to drive the point home. And They Call Us Run-DMC and Soul To Rock And Roll both bring things back to their early days, with sure-fire park jam rhymes and killer cuts.

Tougher Than Leather, which went platinum up against a lot of competition, perfectly bookends the 80s output of one of the decades most important groups. It encompasses the full range of the trios capabilities, and reminds us that Run-DMC should never be forgotten as both pioneers and party-rockers. RIP Jam Master Jay

Tracklist:

A1 Run's House
A2 Mary, Mary
A3 They Call Us Run-D.M.C.
A4 Beats To The Rhyme
A5 Radio Station
A6 Papa Crazy
B1 Tougher Than Leather
B2 I'm Not Going Out Like That
B3 How'd Ya Do It Dee
B4 Miss Elaine
B5 Soul To Rock And Roll
B6 Ragtime

Up until Raising Hell, the rap juggernaut we know as Run-DMC was still in its building and breaking-down- doors phase. In 1986 that changed, and in a dramatic way. With their third long-player, the group had reached the mountaintop. It was THE record that proved hip-hop wasnt a fad.

Raising Hell marked an important and significant new era for the group. Leaving producer Larry Smith for up-and-coming sonic innovator Rick Rubin (still co-produced by Runs brother Russell Simmons), they began to fully transition not only their own sound but the sound of the entire genre. Less live playing – with some exceptions – and a slicker, tighter sonic attack. Musical aesthetics aside, though, at their core they stayed true to the essence of hip-hop: two turntables and a microphone, or two.

It's impossible to talk about the album without its worldwide smash, Walk This Way, which hit #4 on the Billboard pop charts and saw the group digging in the rock crates to summon Aerosmith in the flesh, combining Steven Tylers and Joe Perry's musicianship with the groups own take on the 70s classic. The song's video cemented Run-DMC as legit MTV idols, and both groups rode its wave to new heights.

Beyond Walk This Way, the platter is full to the hilt with undeniable classic singles: You Be Illin; It's Tricky; Peter Piper and the fashion-world shifting My Adidas. Each song was new proof that Run-DMCs sound was indeed new, but still familiar, and full of the energy, charisma, and innovation that drew fans to their first two LPs.

Aside from the singles, the reason the album stands up so well is the fact that there is virtually no filler. Proud To Be Black remains a pioneering and underrated cut when people talk about conscious hip-hop. Though he maintained a chart presence for much of the late-90s, review scores began to dwindle, and his status among the hip-hop community was thrown into question.

This would change in 2001 with the release of Nas' fifth studio full-length, which made the effort to re-establish him as a legitimate artist. Eschewing the pop-friendliness he'd found success with, Nas instead opted to return to the underground style he came up in, with tracks about American politics, ghetto life, and social upheaval. Perhaps sensing this need to return to his roots, he titled the album Stillmatic, a clear and present reference (and sequel of sorts) to Illmatic.

The ploy worked perfectly; Stillmatic was hailed by critics as a stunning comeback, and a brilliant return to form, earning rave reviews from rap outlets such as The Source and HipHopDX as well as from more mainstream publications as The Rolling Stone and The Village Voice. Praise was heaped upon the complexity and introspective nature of Nas' lyrical content, the top-tier production from veterans like Large Professor, DJ Premier, L.E.S., and Trackmasters, and hard-hitting guest appearances from AZ, Mary J. Blige, and Amerie.

Stillmatic would see release on December 18th of 2001, right as Nas was caught in the middle of a highly publicized feud with fellow New York rapper Jay-Z. As such, the record features one of the feud's most intense apexes in the form of its second track "Ether", a ruthless Ron Browz-produced diss track. A response to Jay-Z's own diss "Takeover", "Ether" savaged the Brooklyn-native, accusing him of brown-nosing to get ahead, of plagiarizing earlier rappers such as Notorious B.I.G. and KRS-One, and dismissing his street cred. To this day "Ether" is considered one of the best and most potent diss tracks ever recorded, a major turning point in the Nas/Jay-Z feud, a standout among the already critically acclaimed Stillmatic, and is even credited with boosting Jay-Z's career by proxy.

TRACKLISTING:

A1. This is not to say that the pair didn't keep busy during their time away from putting out records; if anything some of their highest profile appearances occurred during this period. Through guest slots on now iconic tracks like Three Six Mafia's “Sippin' On Some Syrup”, and Jay-Z's Billboard smash “Big Pimpin'” UGK managed to greatly increase their profile, and build even greater anticipation for a fourth studio album.

This album, titled Dirty Money, would arrive in November of 2001, after having been shelved by their label Jive Records since 1998. Across 14 tracks of syrup-soaked, drawling Southern hip-hop tracks, UGK stretched their creative chops and showed that in the five years since Ridin' Dirty they hadn't lost their step in the slightest. Bun B's and Pimp C's rhymes were free-wheeling, clever, and irreverent as they had ever been, while the production was classic Texas rap, courtesy of Pimp C and Southern hip-hop legend N.O. Joe, who shared production duties. Guest contributions from Juicy J & DJ Paul of Three Six Mafia, Big Gipp of Goodie Mob, Too $hort, Devin The Dude, and more helped bolster the duo's codeine-drenched witticisms, over samples from the likes of BB King, Barry White, and The Staple Singers among others.

Riding on UGK's newfound mainstream fortunes, Dirty Money managed a remarkable #19 debut on the Billboard 200 chart, as well as reaching #2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In spite of this, Jive failed to capitalize on the attention the duo was receiving; with a lack of promotion and marketing behind it the record left just as quickly as it had arrived.
