While In The Raw's hypnotic, defiantly psychedelic funk music was grounded in the great musical traditions of both America and Africa, Earthology finds the Brothers infusing their funk (or, as the Brothers prefer it, "raw soul") with musical traditions that span the globe. To achieve the Earthology's unique sound, the Brothers employed an array of instruments and put in a dizzying amount of research: traveling the world, joining different bands and ethnic performing ensembles, amassing and absorbing field recordings, trawling used record bins for lost examples of global psychedelic-fusion, over a period spanning some fifteen years. Like In The Raw, Earthology is grounded by a "raw soul" band's building blocks: drums, guitar, bass, keys and horns, but it is augmented by such exotic instruments as gongs and flutes from Asia, xylophones and string instruments from Africa and Central American percussion instruments. The funk and soul of Indianapolis, Indiana's Rhythm Machine has run through twelve years' worth of Egon's archival work at both Now-Again and Stones Throw Records: the band, and their previous incarnation, The Highlighters, were featured on the lauded Funky 16 Corners anthology, Jukebox 45s, a Madlib mix album, the recently issued Soul-Cal anthology, and will appear the forthcoming Loving On The Flip Side compendium. Fitting time, then, for an expanded version of the Rhythm Machine's magnum opus, their self-titled 1976 album. So we present to you Rhythm Machine (Deluxe Edition): the band's solitary album, restored from the original tapes, augmented by three previously unreleased tracks and containing an informative booklet chock full of never-before-published photos and extensive liner notes. The Rhythm Machine had undergone a series of personnel changes before they finally recorded their album for Indianapolis' stalwart if small Lulu label. This accomplished showband produced an accessible mixture of funk, uptempo soul and synth-lead ballads; Rhythm Machine contains the masterpiece "Put A Smile On Time" - the song compiled on Soul-Cal, and arguably the song that stoked the feverish demand for original copies of this ultra-rare piece of wax. But fans turned on by that song will want to hear this album in its entirety. It's not perfect, but it's sincere: Rhythm Machine wore their hearts on their sleeves as they traversed the Midwest in the transitional period of the mid 1970s, perfecting the songs that would become Rhythm Machine and, as such, their album contains warm, charming syncopated soul music that benefits greatly from the glimmer that the disco era's decadence bestowed upon them.

Tracklist:

1 You Got Action, You Got Me
2 Lil's Place
3 Put A Smile On Time
4 Thought My Love Was Fine
5 Brenda And Me
6 Everybody's Chippin
7 You Make Me Feel Right, Think Right, Do Right
8 Can't Do Without You
Bonus Tracks:
9 Be Yourself
10 You Pay For What You Get
11 Laying And Palying

An inventive showcase of what's possible when armed with just a sampler, a few studio toys and a fertile imagination, Paul White And The Purple Brain is the intriguing sophomore album from South London producer Paul White. The tales of great high school soul-bands are still rare. A ballad or two on the random Douglass High School Stage Band album or Timeless Legend's mesmerizing entry on Columbus's 1972 1st Annual Inner City Talent Expo notwithstanding, high school bands rarely struck into the realm of "grown folks" music. Enter The Equatics and their brooding masterpiece Doin' It!!!! If this is categorized as a "funk" album - and it was for the last ten years, by those few lucky enough to own an original copy - it holds its own. But it was as a soul band, one as inspired by the melancholic musings of Bill Withers as the psychedelic-pop of the self-proclaimed "Black Moses," Issac Hayes - that the Equatics shone. These young souls offered world-weary, beat-heavy ballads that stand on par with any of the great independent organizations of the early 1970s. That a group of teenagers could offer such an angst-ridden plea as that of Leo Davis's "Merry Go Round" not only transcends the limitations that came from the band's average age (seventeen, at the time of the album's recording), but also the barriers the stood in front of this group of small-city hopefuls. This official reissue was licensed by the Equatics' bandleader, bass player Benjamin Crawford. Packaged as a "mini-LP" in a thick, "paste-on" cardboard sleeve that mimicks the original album jacket, Now-Again's reissue of Doin' It!!!! also comes with an eight-page booklet with full liner notes, annotations, and never-before-seen photos of this most impressive organization.

Tracklist:

1 What They Doin? 3:33
2 Walk On By 3:58
3 Merry Go Round 2:46
4 Santana Part 1 3:04
5 The Touch Of You 3:35
6 Santana Part II 3:01
7 Ain't No Sunshine 3:34
8 Cicso Fare 4:55
9 Where Is Love? 4:35

Now Again Records is proud to present an album entitled Dark Sunrise, an anthology of Zambian "Zam-Rock" godfather Rikki Ililonga and his groundbreaking band Musi-O-Tunya. Profiled within this album and book are the bands that transitioned from funk to disco; the bands that kept up the backbeat as rhythm moved to the backseat. Against the odds, they left recorded artifacts for we at Now-Again to dig out, dust off and restore. Collected here for the first time are the musical dreams of dozens, dreams that were deferred but were never discarded. Soul Cal features some well-known figures from the various "soul" scenes that paved the way for their resurgence. The Northern Soul, Modern Soul and Deep Disco and Funk circles have all obsessed over the likes of Luther Davis, Rhythm Machine, Mixed Sugar and Record Player. But these and Soul Cal's other bands - many of whom managed only to release a solitary 7" single in their heyday - will be unknown to most. Their obscurity notwithstanding, the music made by these bands is sure to strike a chord within the soul of any person taken by black American music from the latter half of the 20th century. In his long-running investigation into this flux-period in black American music, compiler and key researcher Eothen "Egon" Alapatt sought not only licenses, records and master tapes - but the stories and backdrops of these majestic soul songs and the ensembles that created them. It is due to the immense research that his investigation demanded - and the trove of information and music he unearthed - that we at Now-Again decided to present Soul Cal as an album and a book at the same time. Soul Cal's music is too good to be anonymously relaunched and a CD or LP booklet can only hold so much information. Simply telling the stories of these bands without unleashing their largely unheard music just seemed unfair. Thus, Soul Cal offers the enthused a chance to listen to, read about and reflect on this great burst of black American creativity in the decade after funk, the decade before hip-hop.

Tracklist:

1 Luther Davis– You Can Be A Star
2 U.P.C. The album's mix of blistering, fuzzy rock and synth-lead funk inspired collectors the world over to fork over thousands of dollars for original copies of this - until recently - unknown platter. Part of the interest certainly stemmed from its liberal doses of searing fuzz guitar; part of it sprung from the oddity of it all: India, a country that had, quite literally, churned out tens of thousands of albums during psych- and hard-rock's heyday, only produced this one, lonely psychedelic album; part of it sprung from the album's rarity. Unknown for years, Obsession '77 suddenly became a top want on every global-rock collector's short-list. Over the past four years, we at Now-Again Records have followed Atomic Forest's sounds - and we've struck paydirt. Now, with the full participation of founding member/vocalist Madhukar Chandra Dhas and lead-guitarist Abraham Mammen, we present Obsession. This anthology collects songs from Obsession '77, the band's follow up Hit Film Themes and unreleased studio and live recordings from Atomic Forest band members. Dhas' extensive archives of photos and ephemera add weight to this anthology - the first thorough investigation into India's 70s psychedelic rock scene. A scene that, until now, has been shrouded in secrecy and rumor - clouded in a druggy haze. Atomic Forest's story stands in for the untold stories of many of India's underground bands - bands remembered vividly by those who witnessed their performances; bands that often homemade, cassette recordings - that have been lost to time. He first found credit as "Apple" on a Marie Franklin single released on disc jockey Douglas Moore's Stage Music imprint. He would engage Moore to issue "Free And Easy," the first record released as Apple and The Three Oranges. This rapid development from road hog to recording artist inspired him to found Sagittarius Records, named after his zodiac sign. His run with Sagittarius contains six unimpeachable soul and funk numbers released under the Apple and The Three Oranges banner and one issued under his own name, Ed. (sic) Nelson. These songs, and his prior recordings, are ripe for a historical reappraisal. Monday's manic rant relegated "What Goes Around Comes Around" to the funk freak show, but Nelson's introductory 12 bars contain some of the most unique funk drumming ever cut to lacquer. The low fidelity of every Apple and The Three Oranges single was never a problem for the low-riding Eastside Angelenos, who lionized tracks such as "True Love Will Never Die," but their muddy quality cast Nelson outside of the canon in which troubled soul singers like Bobby Womack have held court for decades. Nelson's master tapes - lost in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina - will never surface to right this wrong. And the records themselves are rare: the "Love Brings Out The Best Of You," "Curse Upon The World" and "I'll Give You A Ring (When I Come, If I Come)" singles are amongst the most sought after and expensive Los Angeles soul and funk records to ever list at auction. Thus, we are privileged to present Nelson's complete works in our Free and Easy anthology. Nearly forty years after he gave up on his recording career, we're left with little more than Nelson's explosive music and his straight-shooting stories of his life's arc. The fact he can't explain his life's contradictions are what makes the extensive interview contained in Free and Easy's book a compelling read. Whether it's his first hand experience with the great New Orleans drummers who laid the foundations of funk, or his relating the oft-told, and always sad, tale of lust supplanting love, Nelson offers confounding words to complement his all too beautiful soul and funk music.

Tracklist:

1 What Goes Around Comes Around
2 Free And Easy Pt. 1
3 Free And Easy Pt. 2
4 Down Home Publicity
5 True Love Will Never Die
6 My Baby
7 Love Brings Out The Best Of You
8 Curse Upon The World
9 Moon Light
10 Gotta Stand For Something Pt. 1
11 Gotta Stand For Something Pt. 2
12 My Love Needs Your Love (And Everybody Needs Love)
13 I'll Give You A Ring (When I Come, If I Come)

Acting, Thinking, Feeling marks the first time that psychedelic jazz ensemble The Stark Reality's Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop album has been reissued in full (the 2003 Stones Throw Records anthology Now only contained half of the original album's music). The anthology also contains the band's out-of-print Roller Coaster Ride (first issued in 1969 on Now-Again in 2003), and a series of recently discovered, previously unreleased tracks in a 3-CD "complete works" box set. Besides the missing Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop songs, the most exciting additions to the Stark Reality's oeuvre are the three songs recorded between the earliest incarnation of the band - the big band that recorded "Theme To Say Brother" and "Acting, Thinking, Feeling" in 1968 - and the slimmed-down combo that recorded the Roller Coaster Ride and The Stark Reality Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop. These recordings display a band in flux, and color the development of Stark's genius. We hear the signature sound of his "plugged in" vibes for the first time; we hear an early stab at the psychedelic "Red Yellow Moonbeams" (and realize why his addition of John Abercrombie and his fuzz guitar was crucial to his vision); we hear a subtle change towards a more funk- and rock based sound. This anthology thus encapsulates the first known Stark Reality recordings - done for and in performance at WGBH, these transitional big band pieces, and the Roller Coaster Ride and The Stark Reality Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop albums in full. The liner notes are updated with Ahmad Jamal's participation, more photos, and full annotation of the additional songs.

Tracklist:

Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop

1-1 Merry Go Round 1:26

1-2 Junkman's Song 7:34

1-3 Thirty Days Hath September 6:17

1-4 The Whale 1:21

1-5 The Old Prospector 7:47

1-6 Grandfather Clock 8:08

1-7 Cooking 2:38

1-8 Shooting Stars 6:30

1-9 Rocket Ship 4:12

2-1 Dreams 8:07

2-2 Blue Pillow 5:01

2-3 Swing High 1:23

2-4 Clouds 6:03

2-5 Traveling 1:48

2-6 Bustin' Out Of Doors 6:13

2-7 Comrades 6:37

2-8 All You Need To Make Music 12:19

Acting, Thinking, Feeling & Roller Coaster Ride

3-1 On Being Black 3:24

3-2 New World Generation 8:31

3-3 Red Yellow Moonbeams (Big Band Version) 7:30

3-4 Red Yellow Moonbeams 9:10

3-5 Nani 4:38

3-6 Pretty Music 7:04

3-7 Roller Coaster Ride 8:01

3-8 Too Much Tenderness 3:34

3-9 Sunday's Song 10:03

3-10 Acting, Thinking, Feeling Pt. 1 4:15

3-11 Acting, Thinking, Feeling Pt. 2 2:19

3-12 Acting, Thinking, Feeling Pt. 3 2:01

3-13 Prelude To Say Brother 3:29

3-14 Theme To Say Brother 4:28

The Heliocentrics' debut album, Out There (2007) was a confounding piece of work. Drawing equally from the funk universe of James Brown, the disorienting asymmetry of Sun Ra, the cinematic scope of Ennio Morricone, the sublime fusion of David Axelrod, Pierre Henry's turned-on musique concrete, and Can's beat-heavy Krautrock, Out There pointed the way towards a brand new kind of psychedelia, one that could only come from a band of accomplished musicians who were also obsessive music fans. Drummer Malcolm Catto and bassist Jake Ferguson are the Heliocentrics' masterminds and producers, and guitarist Ade Owusu, percussionist Jack Yglesisas and keyboardist Ollie Parfitt hold constant presence within this ever-evolving ensemble. They have been playing together for over a decade and their collective drive is to find an individual voice. The Heliocentrics search for it in an alternate galaxy where the orbits of funk, jazz, psychedelic, electronic, avant-garde and "ethnic" music all revolve around "The One." Back at Now-Again with 13 Degrees of Reality, the Heliocentrics have returned to develop this epic vision of psychedelic funk, while exploring the possibilities created by their myriad influences - Latin, African, and more. Thus, the electro-Latin fusion of "Descarga Electronica" sits next to weeping strings piled atop "Collateral Damage's" chunky rhythms, which passes undulating swing of "Wrecking Ball," a dirge as irresistibly funky as it is devastating. No surprise, then, that the Heliocentrics have earned lifetime fans in the likes of questing spirits like Madlib (with whom Catto has collaborated on numerous Yesterdays New Quintet projects), DJ Shadow (both as a touring ensemble and in the studio), Quantic and Ethiopian jazz giant Mulatu Astatke, with whom the Heliocentrics recorded and released Inspiration Information 3, the fourth classic Mulatu album - released nearly forty years after his other three. Out There may have been one hell of an opening volley, but having spent some years in the wild running among mavericks like Astatke and Oriental Jazz pioneer Lloyd Miller, the Heliocentrics have realized that their strongest statements are made somewhere between the persistent fuzz of Owusu's distorted guitar, Catto's impossible syncopation and Ferguson's looping bass lines. 13 Degrees of Reality is one of the most distinctive musical statements you'll hear all year.

Tracklist:

1 Feedback (Intro)
2 Ethnicity
3 Public Safety Broadcast (Interlude)
4 Mysterious Ways
5 Dreams (Interlude)
6 Collateral Damage
7 Outtake (Interlude)
8 Freeness Part 2
9 Wrecking Ball
10 Mind Readers (Interlude)
11 Descarga Electronica
12 A Musical Conspiracy (Interlude)
13 Eastern Begena
14 Hall Of Mirrors (Interlude)
15 Mr. Owusu, I Presume?
16 The Abstract And The Absolute (Interlude)
17 Black Sky
18 Prepare For Lift-Off (Interlude)
19 Path Of The Black Sun
20 Calabash
21 Vibrations Of The Fallen Angels (Outro)

Soul and funk music recorded by US Army Servicemen during the height of the Vietnam War and released as albums by the US Army as recruitment tools. United States Army soldiers made the music contained in this two-CD re-release during the politically turbulent early 70s, towards the end of the Vietnam War. East of Underground and SOAP were bands comprised of soldiers stationed in bases across Western Germany. While little is known about the bands, the players, and the milieu they came from - other than what can be pieced together from a handful of photos and documents found in a box in the New York Public Library, and the vague recollections of some of those involved - we at Now-Again Records have worked diligently with the United States Army and researchers the country over to present this important document - and some damn good soul and funk music. Only one former band member has come forward during the assembly of this anthology, which has lead us to question: where did these talented performers land after their winning performances in Army-sponsored Battle Of The Bands contests afforded them (musical) tours across European Army bases? Perhaps some are still around somewhere: perhaps some are still involved in music; perhaps some were killed in action; perhaps some passed on after returning to the States. The legendary Zamrock band's second album and two rare 7" tracks. Give Love To Your Children follows Now-Again's first foray into the Zamrock genre, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Rikki Ililonga and Musi-O-Tuyna's Dark Sunrise, which compiled Musi-O-Tunya's Pathe East Africa 7" singles, their first album Wings of Africa and Ililonga's first two solo albums, released under his own name: Zambia and Sunshine Love. Dark Sunrise hadn't even entered production when we became aware of Musi-O-Tunya's post-Ililonga trajectory, and its uniqueness in the Zamrock landscape. It is the corollary to Ililonga's mature solo offerings: Give Love To Your Children is teeming with energy and tension, hazily affected by copious drug use, and recorded quickly, before its members parted ways for good. And now, its often sad story can be told, and its incredible music can be heard, thanks to the participation of Ililonga, Chengala and Barnes, who color the creation and release of Give Love To Your Children in an extensive set of liner notes and interviews included in the album's booklet. Give Love To Your Children is a marvelous, thrilling, charging beast of a thing that has to be stared at in the face so as to be understood. This album's grooves hold the last, sustained shouts from one of the first - and greatest - Zamrock ensembles: Musi-O-Tunya exploded at the height of the Zamrock movement with this burst of fuzz guitar, chunky basslines, funk and Zambian folk rhythms, choral chants and compelling lead vocals. This is the music that came from the scene referred to as Zamrock. Left out of our Zamrock investigation, for stylistic reasons as well as logistical concerns, were albums released after Zamrock's heyday, when the music of '80s Zambia came to be influenced by disco and rhumba from neighboring Congo. Bands that didn't adapt sounded outdated. Thus even Zamrock's greatest band, WITCH, splintered, with a skeleton crew of core members embracing younger musicians to record and release two albums that found the band replacing fuzz guitars with whirling synthesizers and trying their hand at soul, disco and boogie. According to Patrick Mwondela, the keyboardist on these albums and the only member of the later WITCH still living, the influences on the band had grown beyond the earlier pull of the Rolling Stones, Grand Funk Railroad and Deep Purple to include the Bee Gees, Commodores, Earth Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang and Michael Jackson. The band privately issued these two albums - Movin' On in 1980, Kuomboka in 1984 - in small quantities before a dearth of gigs and the large ensemble's overhead caused them to disband, sometime in 1985. Zambian music researcher Leonard Koloko calls these later WITCH albums "of international standard and genius" and, superlatives aside, these recordings sound as good as anything coming out of London and Lagos' international recording circles of the time. Though but a decade separated the first and last WITCH albums, the recording capabilities of most nations in sub-Saharan Africa by 1984 had caught up with the rest of the world. Finally, fans of the WITCH's arch can listen to, and acknowledge, the breadth of this great band and assess for themselves the recordings of both of WITCH's incarnations.

Tracklist:

Disc One: Movin' On

1-1 Movin' On

1-2 To Be Felt

1-3 It Was You Boy

1-4 I'm Coming Back

1-5 My Desire

1-6 You Are My Sunshine

1-7 It Feels So Good

1-8 Let's Get Together

Disc Two: Kuomboka

2-1 Erotic Delight

2-2 I Can Do Without You

2-3 Believe Ma Lover

2-4 Kuomboka

2-5 Come Together

2-6 More Sweat Than Sweet

2-7 I Wanna See The Light

2-8 Jah Let The Sunshine

It's been some years since the first Karl Hector release, and it's known now that Mr. Hector is indeed the German producer and guitarist JJ Whitefield, ne Jan Weissenfeldt. Whitefield is the visionary behind the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers, the ensembles whose rough analog sound and return to the funk archetypes of the late 60s to early 70s paved the way for labels like Daptone, Truth & Soul, Timmion. Whitefield, along with Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija, founded Karl Hector and The Malcouns in the early 2000s. Their debut, Sahara Swing, saw release on Now-Again in 2008. The album swung with influences from across the African diaspora and set the stage for a cult, but influential following. Hermes designer Christophe Lemaire picked tracks from Karl Hector and The Malcouns as amongst his favorites in the Now-Again catalog, and included them on his Where Are You From anthology. Festival promoters intrigued by the possibility of resurrecting the careers of once forgotten African mavericks - from Ghana's Ebo Taylor to the progenitors of Zambia's Zamrock scene - brought Hector and crew across Europe playing festivals for ecstatic fans. A grueling tour schedule made recording a follow up album to Sahara Swing quite the challenge, and as a result, the band opted to release limited edition, hand-silkscreened EP's, which continued to show their deft handling of musics from Eastern and Northern Africa alongside Western psychedelia, jazz and funk. Whitefield gave himself 2013 to finish the album that would become Unstraight Ahead, which will see release on Now-Again this summer. Unstraight Ahead finds the band exploring territories even outside of the expansive scope of Sahara Swing. On this album, the West African sounds of Ghana and Mali meet the East African sounds of Mulatu Astatke's Ethiopian jazz and are tied together with the groove heavy experimentalism of The Malcouns' 70s Krautrock godfathers: Can, of course, but also more obscure and equally adventurous groups like Agitation Free, Ibliss and Tomorrow's Gift. "We look to Middle Eastern funk and psychedelic fusions, and to various ethnic records for sound and phrasing," Whitefield states. "We're trying to combine the global experimentalism of Krautrock with the backbeat of funk." This explains how songs in uneven meters - 5/4, 7/8 - always sound so accessible and natural on Unstraight Ahead. It's mainly an instrumental affair, but guest artists appear throughout, from across the African diaspora to those from the worldly Krautrock forebears of their German fatherland: it's Marja, daughter of Embryo founder Christian Burchard, whose vocals open the album. It's an album out of time, one that couldn't have been made in the era its aural aesthetics reference, as its scope is so broad. But it's an album focused by funk - and an ambition to expand funk's reaches. The Malcouns - including Poets of Rhythm songwriter and vocalist Bo Baral - created their own instruments to fashion an album that stands alongside the great albums of its progenitors but charges Unstraight Ahead into a curious musical future.

Tracklist:

1 Introduction
2 Push Na Ya
3 El Gusto
4 Transition >5<
5 Karadeniz
6 The Spirit Of Gine
7 Transition >T<
8 Girma's Lament
9 Sharpville Massacre
10 Samai Thaqil
11 Jo Nibunga
12 Omebele
13 M'Hammad
14 Transition >A<
15 Who's Foolin' Who?
16 Transition >C<
17 Hymnin S
18 Bring It On Down
19 Mission Control
20 Kaifa Part 1+2

Proto-punk and garage Zamrock: the celebrated guitarist Paul Ngozi's essential debut album. Featuring Chrissy Zebby Tembo. Guitarist/vocalist Paul Ngozi's debut album - under the name Ngozi Family - is an important record: not just in the Zamrock genre, but in the global rock canon. Day of Judgement is an introduction to the most intense, raw and inimitable golden era Zamrock recorded, as it paved the way for a dozen Paul Ngozi and Ngozi Family releases (the most famous being drummer Chrissy Zebby Tembo's My Ancestors) that straddled the line between funk and punk, of driving hard rock and Zambian folk melodies and rhythms. Day of Judgement was released in 1976, the same year as other, now famous, Zamrock albums, from WITCH's Lazy Bones!! to Rikki Ililonga's Zambia. But it sounds like none of its counterparts. Part of that stems from its frenzied primitivism, the Ngozi Family's attempt to overcome a lack of musical acumen with sheer force of will. That will allowed Paul Ngozi to overcome a humble upbringing to become the most unlikely combination: Zamrock's most beloved star in its brief but now-well chronicled arc; the only musician to maintain his fame and recording prowess in the dark ages of the '80s; an inspiration to not only aging but young Zambians - and now others, beyond Zambia's borders. But one cannot imagine Paul Ngozi without this album, a full-on aural assault that sounds as wild nearly forty years after its release as it must have sounded in the developing Zamrock landscape from which it emerged. We listen to this anachronistic yet prescient album now as a wholly original, completely unpredictable album in line with those from mavericks from across the world - from the Ramones to the Sex Pistols to Death. And, though it's been over two decades since Paul Ngozi's passing, his voice and vision still seem exciting, powerful, unique, unvarnished, new. Packaged in a deluxe hard cover case book.

Tracklist:

1 Day Of Judgement
2 Hi Babe
3 I Wanna Know
4 Kumanda Kwa Bambo Wanga
5 Tikondane
6 Bwanawe
7 Let Me Know
8 We Wonna Give It To Her
9 I'm On My Way
10 She Looks So Crazy
11 Sunka Mulamu
12 We Were Not Told
13 I've Been Looking For You

An interplanetary space/love odyssey featuring Melvin Van Peebles (Brer Soul, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song). Following Heliocentrics' Out There and 13 Degrees of Reality albums. 2 CD - Instrumentals included on bonus second disc. Melvin Van Peebles, the filmmaker, musician, author behind the landmark movie Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song and the trilogy of Brer Soul albums he released in the 70s has teamed with the UK ensemble Heliocentrics to create an interplanetary space/love odyssey told in twelve chapters. The Last Transmission comes nearly ten years after Van Peebles' appearance as the third member of Quasimoto on Stones Throw Records' 2005 release The Further Adventure of Lord Quas. For the Heliocentrics, The Last Transmission represents their third Now-Again album, following Out There in 2007 and 13 Degrees of Reality in 2013. Van Peebles makes for the Heliocentrics' ideal foil: he did graduate work in astronomy in Holland in the 1950s and maintains an avid interest in cosmology. The Heliocentrics, as their name conveys, draw inspiration from both the philosophic leanings of the likes of Stephen Hawkings and interstellar mysteries, like those surrounding the Malian Dogon tribe's knowledge of the Sirius B star hundreds of years before it was discovered. Their music is as indebted to Sun Ra's interstellar jazz as it is inspired by psychedelia's spiritual expanse. The Last Transmission, presented as a vocal album and an expanded instrumental selection on a bonus disc, can be taken as both the band's interpretation of Van Peebles' poem and a musical voyage inspired by Van Peebles' vivid imagery. The band considers it their defining work, the result of more than a decade of playing and recording together. They've found a voice as a band, one that meshes with Van Peebles,' as he weaves an intergalactic "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." In between producer/drummer Malcolm Catto's thunderous syncopation and producer/bassist Jake Ferguson's bellowing bass lines, amidst the analog electronics and atmospheric interference naturally accorded by their organic analogue process, Van Peebles' voice floats in and out, spectral in its tone, complete in its conviction in the unfathomable sense that life's eruption in the cosmic expanse made, and in love's ability to transform and transcend death.

Tracklist:

The Last Transmission

1-1 Prologue 3:32

1-2 Big Bang Reincarnation 3:03

1-3 Searching For Signs Of Life 1:40

1-4 Blue Mist 1:53

1-5 The Cavern 3:43

1-6 Transformation (Pt. 1) 3:10

1-7 Transformation (Pt. 2) 2:12

1-8 Telepathic Routine 3:11

1-9 The Dance 3:59

1-10 Trust The Cosmos (Believe In The Universe) 3:47

1-11 Infinite List (Toss The Dice) 4:09

1-12 Epilogue 2:01

Instrumentals

2-1 Prologue 3:09

2-2 Big Bang Reincarnation 3:09

2-3 Searching For Signs Of Life 2:02

2-4 Blue Mist 1:36

2-5 The Cavern 2:23

2-6 Transformation (Pt. 1) 3:03

2-7 Transformation (Pt. 2) 2:23

2-8 Telepathic Routine 3:05

2-9 The Dance 7:45

2-10 Trust The Cosmos (Believe In The Universe) 4:46

2-11 Infinite List (Toss The Dice) 10:13

2-12 Epilogue 1:51

First Ever CD Issue For This Recording From James Brown's Backing Band: The Bootsy Collins-lead JB's. Those two streams, as Grammy Winning James Brown historian Alan Leeds details in this album's liner notes, converged for the first time here. This link between Brown's funk and all that followed features Bootsy and his young band running through twelve-minute instrumental take of Marva Whitney's "It's My Thing," replete with blues chord changes, alongside interpretations of the Meters, Kool and the Gang and none other than Jimi Hendrix. This is a young band's James Brown-turned-on-his-head style of funk that they nail in a one-minute vamp that pre-dates their obscure but important work as the Houseguests ensemble and embodies the essence of the psychedelic-flavored music that would propel them into the orbit of George Clinton and his mothership, where they poked cosmic holes in funk's polyrhythmic ozone layer in the mid-1970s. There are only two extant copies of the original King Records test press LP of These Are The J.B.'s. The first commercial issue of this album, was overseen by Now-Again's Egon alongside Leeds and Universal Music Group's James Brown expert Harry Weinger.

Tracklist:

1 These Are The J.B.'s Pt.I & Pt.II 4:45
2 I'll Ze 10:39
3 The Grunt 3:30
4 When You Feel It, Grunt If You Can 12:58

The CD Comes Packaged In A 104 Page Hard Cover, Full Color Book, Filled With Incredible Photos And Words By Noted Expert On Nigerian Music, Uchenna Ikonne.

The Western world was in the throes of peace, love and flower power as Nigeria descended into Civil War in 1967. Jones is a magical type, who communicates with his instrument, his ensembles, and jazz's ancient lineage in a manner so profound that his late-'70s album are out of time with jazz's trajectory, but timeless when presented today. By the late '90s the music of World's Experience Orchestra was circulating throughout the collections of esoteric jazz fans, the likes of Gerald "Jazzman" Short and Gilles Peterson, who played "The Prayer" for those, the Coltrane-enthralled searching for something new, something different. Something spiritual and honest. In what is now Zimbabwe, young people created a rock and roll counterculture that drew inspiration from hippie ideals and the sounds of Hendrix and Deep Purple. The kids in the scene called their music "heavy," because they could feel its impact, and it resonated from Zambia to Nigeria. At its peak in the mid-70s, the heavy rock scene united tens of thousands of young progressives of all racial and social backgrounds. The country was called Rhodesia then, one of the last bastions of white rule in Africa, and heavy rockers defied segregation laws and secret police to make a stand for democratic change. Wells Fargo was at the forefront of the scene, and the title track of this album, Watch Out, was the anthem of the counterculture. This is the first time their music has been issued outside of Zimbabwe. Matthew Shechmeister tells the story of Wells Fargo drawing on interviews with the band's remaining members and numerous trips to Zimbabwe to investigate the genesis of the heavy rock scene under Ian Smith's oppressive government, and its dissipation after Zimbabwe's liberation. A Note From Kourosh Yaghmaei: Questions about the difficulties in and delay of releasing this album emphasize systematic censorship, cultural deletion and even cultural self-destruction, at a state level. They highlight the thoughts in the background of the media and a society hit by crisis, in which no voice of clear protest is heard in the world, not from human right organizations, let alone from the media inside Iran. No mention of this censorship, and torture on an artistic soul, along all social, technological and cultural transitions, in this current century, in a land where the world's greatest [ancient] empire [in] Takhte Jamshid - The Gate of All Nations - or, as the Greeks called it, Persepolis was established 2500 ago. It is impossible, in a few sentences, to explain the irreparable damages and the rubble of adversity that crumbled on me, my family and especially on my homeland in the past 37 years, with the occurrences of such cruelty - terrifying hell-like obstacles - that walking through them is not believable to others. This dark age of culture cannot be described in a few lines; there should be books written about it. Musicians were harassed and beaten in streets and their instruments were broken by boots. I, who was a leading popular artist in Iranian society, in just a few hours, was shown to be anti-culture, a perverted person. This was going on when my ability to earn any income for living expenses from my music was cut off. No light at the end of the tunnel. Iranian society was in awe watching all these horrific changes, in just a few hours. People in Iran know me as the master, the pioneer and the king of modern and rock music, but to protest against this cultural deletion, this censorship, and the physical and mental tortures the government brings upon me, I am forced to decide not to release my works in my own homeland, for an unknown amount of time to come. This doesn't mean I will stop working, and I will have a new album every a few years ready to present to my country. In the end I must point that I only write these words to let the world know about this catastrophe, not to attract sympathy of others, which I hate. It finds its roots in the depths of the Amazon rainforest, passed down through generations of Native Brazilians, and is imbibed by the Afro-Brazilian culture that arose after Portuguese colonization. This blend is not new in Brazil, and is represented musically by great Brazilian musicians both known and celebrated - the guitarist Baden Powell and catalyst Hermeto Pascoal, both direct influences on Do Nascimento - and less exposed, like the experimentalist Carioca, one of Do Nascimento's mentors, and the Brazilian psychedelic pioneer Lula Cortes, whose album Paebiru rewrote Brazilian rock's history in 1975. It is the third Brazilian album released on Now-Again, following Seu Jorge and Almaz and Do Nascimento's debut Danca dos Tempos. Do Nascimento's is joined on Tempo dos Mestres by his long time percussionist, Ricardo "Tiki" Pasillas on trap drums and percussion, and Sam Gendel on saxophone and flute. Vocals are performed by Thalma de Freitas and Carla Hasset. These tracks were recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, straight to 2" analog-tape, and only sparingly mastered to focus on the subtleties of the performances. Do Nascimento's fans include legendary percussionist Airto Moreira, who recorded Danca dos Tempos and can be found playing live with Do Nascimento. "He's Brazilian but (his mind is) from a place in Brazil that is not common." Moreira states. "Fortunately, we still have some musicians who like to play music and who like to touch the instrument and who like that energy!" Do Nascimento takes his music, and his place in Brazil's lineage, seriously, and he often travels the vast country, spending time in the rainforest, living life as it was lived in the distant past, while studying with still living masters as he searches for new directions of the path trod by the geniuses whose influence abounds in contemporary music, but whose names are still unfamiliar. "Being a musician - feeling, studying, experiencing, living music -this comes first, right?" Do Nascimento questions. " Second, we hope that the depths of knowledge in the music from the masters before us can be shared more, each time, to the younger generations coming." In Tempo dos Mestres Do Nascimento answers himself with a beautiful entry into the evolving language of timeless Brazilian music.

Tracklist:

1 Planalto
2 Baião
3 Brasilerinho
4 Oya Nanã
5 Ja Que Tû
6 Canto De Xangô
7 Louva-a-deus "Mantis"
8 Sambando
9 O Tempo
10 Matrisadan

103-page hard cover book with CD. Jazz, blues, R&B, soul, hip-hop, house, gospel. One influential genre is always left off of the list: a folk music known as rock n' roll. Rock n' roll was a term originally coined to market the white-friendly version of a genre that already existed; prior to 1965, the line between rock n' roll and R&B was thin: Ike Turner recorded and released "Rocket '88' " in 1951 and, while its Chess Records release reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart, it is regarded by many as the first rock n' roll record. The Great Divide between R&B and rock n' roll came after the Beatles and the British Invasion decimated the Top 40 chart in 1964. Simultaneously, R&B entered a new phase, soon to be labeled "soul," which upped the music's gospel quotient and turned its frantic twang. So somewhere in the mid to late-1960s, rock n' roll became perceived as something for the Caucasian kids. When Jimi Hendrix and Arthur Lee made the scene, they were said to be black musicians entering into a white world. While that couldn't be farther from the truth, that false dichotomy has existed in America's popular conscious ever since, to the point where the idea of a black rock musician is on the level with the idea of a black cowboy. In the mid-1960s, funk replaced soul as the rhythm that was going to move the world. We know all its progenitor - James Brown, The Meters, Kool & The Gang - and their innovations: the syncopated, 4/4 dance between the bass and drums, horns repurposed as percussion, chicken-scratch and wah-wah guitar. We can trace where they came from. But there is one crucial funk influence that no one seems to want to acknowledge - a devil-may-care attitude we can attribute to rock n' roll. It's not a stretch to say that funk is the African-American answer to psychedelia and hard rock rolled into one. The idea of "progressivism" that took over rock music after psychedelia's heyday in the late 1960s belatedly spilled over to funk. In the early 1970s, as the underground/psychedelic fire burnt out in the white rock world, it roared to a blaze in the black musical community. Nearly every American city with a large black population boasted self-contained funk bands that didn't consider themselves simply revues or backup groups, but rather fully-operational ensembles In these bands, everything from composing, arranging, record production and distribution, was handled in house by band members. These are the bands whose music comprises this anthology, and while they're all different, they're unique in one way: they kept their ears open for new developments in funk and rock music. This anthology presents earnest questions as to why we know so little about these bands and the movement of which they were a part. While we don't anticipate that we'll ever find a definitive answer as to what these ensembles' true goals were, then, we do know that they took their charges seriously. And they knew they were onto something different, something that, though only they and their immediate kin might recognize it, was more interesting than the status quo. Function Underground shines light on an important and overlooked part of rock n' roll's history and talented ensembles that toiled in the shadows, derided by their peers 'Do you realize that Hendrix was dead before most black people in America knew he was a black man?" Ebony Rhythm Band drummer Matthew Watson questions rhetorically. "We was scorned. In that era, everybody else in the black community was wearing three-piece suits, processes and Afro wigs and that shit. We was the first guys to wear bell bottoms. The first guys to wear big hats. We were off into a whole other thing."

Tracklist:

1 1984– There’s A Wrinkle In Our Time 2:41
2 Purple Snow– Down By The River 3:56
3 James Macon– Jimi’s Guitar Raps With The Bass 2:40
4 Creations Unlimited– Corruption Is The Thing 3:00
5 We The People (15)– Function Underground 2:54
6 Michael Liggins And The Super Souls– Loaded Back 4:03
7 Stone Coal White– Stone Coal White 2:42
8 Blacklites*– BL Movement 2:23
9 Ebony Rhythm Band– Drugs Ain’t Cool 2:45
10 Cisneros And Garza Group– I’m A Man 2:47
11 L.A. Bubbha and his band's story is told in great detail by Houston music and cultural historian Lance Scott Walker (Houston Rap / Houston Rap Tapes) and Now-Again's Eothen Alapatt, in a booklet that contains unpublished photographs.

Tracklist:

Disc One - Stereo Version

1-1 Creative Music

1-2 Free As You Wanna Be

1-3 High Pockets

1-4 Talk Visit

1-5 May '67

1-6 #109 Psychosomatic

1-7 Luke 23:32-49

Disc Two - Mono Version

2-1 Creative Music (Mono)

2-2 Free As You Wanna Be (Mono)

2-3 High Pockets (Mono)

2-4 Talk Visit (Mono)

2-5 May '67 (Mono)

2-6 #109 Psychosomatic (Mono)

2-7 Luke 23:32-49 (Mono)

Texas funk music is amongst the highest regarded styles in the genre, a unique mixture of jazz, blues, R&B and James Brown's syncopation that evolved in metropolises like Houston (Kashmere Stage Band), San Antonio (Mickey and the Soul Generation), Austin (James Polk and the Brothers) and Dallas. Rodinia, his latest project, is quite different than anything that's come from his oeuvre to date, but follows in the line of the Poets of Rhythm's great Discern/Define, as it reaches back to Krautrock's experimental heyday but pushes its boundaries with a post-hip-hop approach. Rodinia's first album, Drumside/Dreamside, featured two, side-long suites, with synthesizers taking the fore on an overarching ambient approach (featuring over-dubbed reeds, drums and guitar, and self-made Moroccan field recordings introducing the project on its Drumside.) For Ex Anima, Rodinia has incorporated more of the mid-70s approach of Krautrock forebears Neu!, Cluster and Harmonia, with shorter, self-contained songs. The result is winsome and exploratory, respectfully distanced from the past's trappings while celebrating a musical spirit still very much alive and influential. Earth Rot is visionary composer/arranger/producer David Axelrod's third album, and the last of his Capitol trilogy. Recorded as a concept album about the decrepit state of the environment in 1970 Los Angeles, and scheduled for release on the first Earth Day, it features choral vocals and marks a departure for Axelrod's signature sound, which would take on a jazzier feel in the 1970s. This definitive version of Earth Rot, overseen by Now-Again's Eothen Alapatt in conjunction with Axelrod's Estate, fulfills a request Axelrod made while alive - to see the instrumentals of this album, never before released, issued. They see release here as the second half of a deluxe CD reissue. This is an audiophile reissue, with the vocal version transferred directly from Axelrod's original master tapes at Capitol Records by Ron McMaster. The master was approved by Axelrod's son Michael, who adapted ancient lyrics for the album in one of three collaborative projects he did with his father. Contains a 32 page booklet that delves into Axelrod's incredible life and music, replete with never before published photos and an interview. "There are very few people who see the Grand Picture of the Universe and understand the Nothingness that it all comes from. Rare 7" singles and previously unreleased tracks presented as an album for the first time. In the early '70s, Jessie Key and Sylvester Cleary - two passionate idealists living in Buffalo, New York - formed a close friendship based on a mutual mission to better their city. The Attica State Prison Riot of 1971 was a burning memory, and the Arthur vs. Nyquist lawsuit - brought against the City of Buffalo for creating and maintaining a racially segregated school system - was on the docket. Key was once a cotton-laborer in Mississippi, who journeyed north for school where he met his kindred spirit, Cleary. The two struck up an intense friendship, bought a drum machine and recorded their first 45, "A Man," a paean to self-actualization and Black American empowerment, which they custom pressed and issued privately. Dozens of recordings followed over a decade long span, issued on local labels and warehoused on cassette tapes. Perennial optimists, Key & Cleary tried any - perhaps every! - path they could demarcate in hopes of forwarding their agenda of self-effected, positive change. They formed Buffalo's first minority-owned construction company, opened a health food restaurant in a building previously occupied by a fast food chain, and even concocted a candy bar called "The Buffalo Treat," which they manufactured and sold locally. Eventually they started their own label, Buffalo's Reflection. On it they released their masterpiece, "What It Takes To Live," a sought-after disco and Northern Soul classic, which previously appeared on Now-Again's Soul Cal anthology. This album collates the breadth of Key & Cleary's recordings from 1970 until the mid 1980s, both the songs issued on rare 7" singles and previously unreleased. It presents a conjoined musical vision and tells the story of a duo years ahead of their time, both musically and culturally. Love Is The Way was their ethos - their goal was to enlighten humanity and to bend history in a more loving direction through communion.

Tracklist:

1-1 A Man
1-2 There Are Troubles
1-3 Turn Me On
1-4 Since I Lost Your Love
1-5 Dog's Delight
1-6 The Secret
1-7 Young People
1-8 Lay Your Head
1-9 Salamanca
1-10 Storm Of '77
1-11 Help Build Buffalo
1-12 What It Takes To Live
1-13 To Love
2-1 (I've Learned Now) What It Takes To Live
2-2 Love Is The Way
2-3 Video
2-4 Dunkirk Ice Cream
2-5 Had Your Love
2-6 Interlude
2-7 Help Build Buffalo (Demo Version)
2-8 Drum Solo
2-9 May 1977 Car Conversation

Al Manfredi is the father of hip-hop producer Exile, and Blue Gold is his little-known West Coast rock masterpiece from 1973. Manfredi's dreams of securing a record deal with this album faded, but he spent the rest of his life recording music. This version of the album was overseen by Exile. Born into a musical family Al Manfredi started writing songs when he was child. As a teenager in 1965, he formed the Nuts & Bolts in the small beach town of San Clemente, California. Inspired by the Kinks, the Beatles and the Byrds, the group separated themselves from the pack by also performing original material written by Manfredi and band mate Mike Ingram. In late 1966 they changed their name to the Lost & Found and relocated to Phoenix, Arizona, where they cut a rare single, "Don't Move Girl" b/w "To Catch the Sun," which now commands high coin from '60s garage collectors. When they returned to San Clemente in early 1967 their music had taken a more psychedelic direction. The Lost & Found were riding high that year, until tragedy struck. Ingram was found hanged under suspicious circumstances and soon after Lost & Found drummer Mike Ryer died of cancer at the age of 19. Heartbroken, Manfredi gave up on the band scene completely and moved to Garden Grove to teach at his family's music store. But alone, behind closed doors, he kept writing songs and working on his music, recording hours of tapes, often tracking all the instruments himself. In 1973 he chose six of his best songs, some of them written back in the Lost & Found days, and had them custom-pressed as an LP. Only a handful of copies were pressed, and most of these were sent out to various record companies in the hope of landing a deal. Despite the outstanding quality of the music, there were no takers. But decades later, collectors discovered the Al Manfredi album and hailed it a West Coast rock masterpiece. In his Acid Archives book, Patrick Lundborg called its discovery a deus ex machina and compared it to David Crosby's first solo album and Hawaii-era Merrell Fankhauser, "not just the acutely captured mellowness, but the self-confidence and the talent." This little-known West Coast rock masterpiece was rediscovered and celebrated by Acid Archives founder Patrick Lundborg and others around the time that Manfredi died in 1995. This version of the album, overseen by Manfredi's son Exile, and with Manfredi's story told by Ugly Things' founder Mike Stax, presents the complete package of an incredible lost and found artist.

Tracklist:

1-1 Al Manfredi– Of The Sea 3:10
1-2 Al Manfredi– I Don't Live Today 4:24
1-3 Al Manfredi– Five Six 2:54
1-4 Al Manfredi– Blue Gold 3:15
1-5 Al Manfredi– Foggy Night 4:33
1-6 Al Manfredi– Empty Of Your Possessions 3:15
1-7 Al Manfredi– What A Way To Be Laughing 4:14
1-8 Al Manfredi– Let It Alone 4:23
1-9 Al Manfredi– Never With You (Acoustic Version) 3:51
1-10 The Lost And Found– To Catch The Sun
2:16
1-11 The Lost And Found– Don't Move Girl
2:04
2-1 Al Manfredi– Can Be Near You 6:11
2-2 Al Manfredi– Basking 6:00
2-3 Al Manfredi– What A Way To Be Laughing (Acoustic Version) 4:56
2-4 Al Manfredi– Start Factory 7:21
2-5 Al Manfredi– Just Can't Stay Away 6:41

Sho is Funky Down Here and The Grodeck Whipperjenny are a pair of albums that are the result of an unlikely but highly productive musical relationship between James Brown, a superstar at the creative and commercial peaks of his long career, and David Matthews, a then young arranger-musician whose limited professional experience had little or nothing to do with the funk and soul of his collaborator. The long-standing band's third album. Featuring Marja Burchard (Embryo). It's been over ten years since Karl Hector and the Malcouns' Sahara Swing saw release on Now-Again in 2008. Producer JJ Whitefield even founded an Afro-Rock band, Johnny!, with Taylor's son Henry. Unstraight Ahead, their sophomore release from 2014, found the band exploring territories even outside of the expansive scope of Sahara Swing: West African sounds of Ghana and Mali met the East African sounds of Mulatu Astatke's Ethiopian jazz, tied together with the groove heavy experimentalism of The Malcouns' 70s Krautrock godfathers: Can, of course, but also more obscure and equally adventurous groups like Agitation Free, Ibliss and Tomorrow's Gift. "We look to Middle Eastern funk and psychedelic fusions, and to various ethnic records for sound and phrasing," Whitefield stated at the time of Unstraight Ahead's release. "We're trying to combine the global experimentalism of Krautrock with the backbeat of funk." Non Ex Orbis, the band's third studio album, digs deeper into the Krautrock history embedded deep in the soil of their native Munch - three of the most influential bands of the 1970s experimental German rock scene spurng from there: Amon DUUl, Popol Vuh and Embryo. Influenced by these musical heroes, Whitefield shapes a sound that takes the experimental approach of the classic Krautrock era and slides between beat-heavy drone and spacey, prog-rock suites. Marja Burchard, daughter of Embryo mastermind Christian Burchard, fronts the group on keyboard, vibraphone and other-worldly vocals. Al Markovic joins longstanding Malcoun Zdenko Curilija to round out the ensemble. Non Ex Orbis, read by Whitefield and the band as Out Of This World, symbolizes an innocent way of composing and improvising music, free from the influences of our contemporary environment, preserving a childlike way of hearing sounds in their unfiltered purity. "Some will classify this as a retro, but for the band it simply is a form of creating, Whitefield states. "We're drawing from an established musical vocabulary which was popular at a time in Germany, when underground musical culture had its creative peak."

Tracklist:

1 Non Ex Orbis 5:43
2 Crawling Through Your Mind 3:23
3 Hymnin5 (Extended) 5:09
4 Stossgebet 6:42
5 Asteroid 6:12
6 Inhale/Exhale 4:50
7 Mother Seletta 8:07
8 Dekagon 3:21
