acting-thinking-feeling-3xcd
Acting, Thinking, Feeling (3xCD)

Acting, Thinking, Feeling marks the first time that psychedelic jazz ensemble The Stark Reality's Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop album has been reissued in full (the 2003 Stones Throw Records anthology Now only contained half of the original album's music). The anthology also contains the band's out-of-print Roller Coaster Ride (first issued in 1969 on Now-Again in 2003), and a series of recently discovered, previously unreleased tracks in a 3-CD "complete works" box set. Besides the missing Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop songs, the most exciting additions to the Stark Reality's oeuvre are the three songs recorded between the earliest incarnation of the band - the big band that recorded "Theme To Say Brother" and "Acting, Thinking, Feeling" in 1968 - and the slimmed-down combo that recorded the Roller Coaster Ride and The Stark Reality Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop. These recordings display a band in flux, and color the development of Stark's genius. We hear the signature sound of his "plugged in" vibes for the first time; we hear an early stab at the psychedelic "Red Yellow Moonbeams" (and realize why his addition of John Abercrombie and his fuzz guitar was crucial to his vision); we hear a subtle change towards a more funk- and rock based sound. This anthology thus encapsulates the first known Stark Reality recordings - done for and in performance at WGBH, these transitional big band pieces, and the Roller Coaster Ride and The Stark Reality Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop albums in full. The liner notes are updated with Ahmad Jamal's participation, more photos, and full annotation of the additional songs.

Tracklist:

Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop

1-1 Merry Go Round 1:26

1-2 Junkman's Song 7:34

1-3 Thirty Days Hath September 6:17

1-4 The Whale 1:21

1-5 The Old Prospector 7:47

1-6 Grandfather Clock 8:08

1-7 Cooking 2:38

1-8 Shooting Stars 6:30

1-9 Rocket Ship 4:12

2-1 Dreams 8:07

2-2 Blue Pillow 5:01

2-3 Swing High 1:23

2-4 Clouds 6:03

2-5 Traveling 1:48

2-6 Bustin' Out Of Doors 6:13

2-7 Comrades 6:37

2-8 All You Need To Make Music 12:19

Acting, Thinking, Feeling & Roller Coaster Ride

3-1 On Being Black 3:24

3-2 New World Generation 8:31

3-3 Red Yellow Moonbeams (Big Band Version) 7:30

3-4 Red Yellow Moonbeams 9:10

3-5 Nani 4:38

3-6 Pretty Music 7:04

3-7 Roller Coaster Ride 8:01

3-8 Too Much Tenderness 3:34

3-9 Sunday's Song 10:03

3-10 Acting, Thinking, Feeling Pt. 1 4:15

3-11 Acting, Thinking, Feeling Pt. 2 2:19

3-12 Acting, Thinking, Feeling Pt. 3 2:01

3-13 Prelude To Say Brother 3:29

3-14 Theme To Say Brother 4:28
