dark-sunrise-cd
Dark Sunrise (2xCD)

Now Again Records is proud to present an album entitled Dark Sunrise, an anthology of Zambian "Zam-Rock" godfather Rikki Ililonga and his groundbreaking band Musi-O-Tunya. The anthology surveys Musi-O-Tunya's rarely heard 7" singles - not just the first psychedelic rock music, but the first pop music independently released in Zambia - their debut album Wings of Africa and follows Ililonga's solo career in its first stages, with his Zambia and Sunshine Love albums. While global psychedelic rock and funk enthusiasts have recently been introduced to Zam-Rock via Now Again and Shaddock's re-issues of the likes of Witch and Amanaz's early albums, Dark Sunrise stands as the definitive document that, both musically and in prose, shines light on this African musical hotbed. Dark Sunrise contains 32 tracks that can be distilled to simple descriptionsdriving music characterized by James Brown's raw funk, combined with the fuzz guitar sounds of Jimi Hendrix and the polyrhythms native to this African nation. But this neglects to mention Musi-O-Tunya and Ililonga's otherworldliness. Sure, the majority of their work is performed in English, but this is unique psychedelic rock/blues/rumba/folk/funk music, the likes of which has rarely been heard outside of Zambia's borders. This gem is packaged as a 2xCD hardbound book. Included is a stunning full color booklet with never-before-seen photos, ephemera, an introduction to the Zam-Rock scene and a candid interview between Egon and this little known yet genius African multi-instrumentalist himself.

Tracklist:

1-1 Musi-O-Tunya– Tsegulani 6:24
1-2 Musi-O-Tunya– Mpondolo 7:57
1-3 Musi-O-Tunya– Walk And Fight 7:53
1-4 Musi-O-Tunya– The Sun
1-5 Musi-O-Tunya– Dark Sunrise 8:26

1-6 Musi-O-Tunya– One Reply 5:41
1-7 Musi-O-Tunya– The Wings Of Africa 7:05
1-8 Musi-O-Tunya– Jekete Yamankowa Part1 2:43
1-9 Musi-O-Tunya– Jekete Yamankowa Part2 2:43
1-10 Musi-O-Tunya– Chalo Chawama 3:45
1-11 Musi-O-Tunya– Ng'ombe Shala 3:47
1-12 Musi-O-Tunya– Mpulula 3:37
1-13 Musi-O-Tunya– Smoke 4:21
2-1 Rikki Ililonga– Sansa Kuwa 4:35
2-2 Rikki Ililonga– Sheebeen Queen 4:53
2-3 Rikki Ililonga– Stop Dreaming Mr. D 3:33
2-4 Rikki Ililonga– The Hole 4:42
2-5 Rikki Ililonga– Hot Fingers 4:09
2-6 Rikki Ililonga– Se Keel Me Queek 4:56
2-7 Rikki Ililonga– The Nature Of Man 3:54
2-8 Rikki Ililonga– Musamuseka 3:01
2-9 Rikki Ililonga– Zambia 3:18
2-10 Rikki Ililonga– The Queen Blues 4:46
2-11 Rikki Ililonga– Love Is The Way 4:15
2-12 Rikki Ililonga– Lovely Woman 4:03
2-13 Rikki Ililonga– Munzi Wa Kangawana 2:36
2-14 Rikki Ililonga– Working On The Wrong Thing 3:45
2-15 Rikki Ililonga– Ulemu 1:50
2-16 Rikki Ililonga– Sunshine Love 3:15
2-17 Rikki Ililonga– Take It Light 4:15
2-18 Rikki Ililonga– Angel Black 3:22
