Norwegian producer Ole-Birger NeergĂ„rd revisits 74: Out of Time with emotive ideations; new remixes featuring Fly Anakin, Pink Siifu, Gabe âNandez, Quelle Chris, and other notables from the current vanguard of rap progressives. Weaving social and cultural themes throughout, this ambitious project is a corollary to the unrest and tension felt in 1974, a year of political disruption and disillusionment â not unlike our current state of affairs.
NeergĂ„rdâs minimalistic approach contains multitudes, tracks with high levels of organization in its simplicity, with a jazz-anchored tapestry that also includes YUNGMORPHEOUS, lojii, and Tha God Fahim. On âSlippery,â a spiritually intimate profession, the enigmatic billy woods says: âI used to think the means justified the ends / I had it backwards, I made amends.â
This sense of numerology surrounding â74â underscores the project in other ways, specifically the sample palette, and a stark sense of activism, emphasized by songs titled, âOut of Life,â âResting Rateâ and âWish I Could Go Back.â True to form, the entire album is paced at 74 BPM, with the cast of guests jutting in and out of OBBâs fluid arrangements, which can be bold when bare yet richly layered during flourishing moments. -David Ma

Critical Praise:
âThe albumâs songs are a seamless blanket of hypnotizing loops made from dusky vibraphone, misty keys, and shimmering cymbals. This is hip-hop as intimate, late-night jazz club music. The MCs likewise stick to the task of writing within the albumâs
conceptual framework.â -Bandcamp
ââ74: Out Of Timeâ lives up to its title. When music can often seem like fast food, this feels anachronisticâsomething from the preemail days of collaboration, with â70s afternoon Jazz sounds complemented by laid-back raps aimed at your synapse.â -
Ambrosia for Heads
âThe paradox at the center of Olâ Burger Beatsâ latest collection of songs is that the Norwegian hip-hop producer and curator of emcees is able to make the listener feel like theyâre simultaneously living in 1974 and 2024 at any given moment across 74: Out of Timeâs 17 tracks.â -FLOOD Magazine
