Description

The first-ever commercial release of two long-lost spiritual jazz gems from clarinetist Alvin Batiste and his Southern University Jazz Ensemble. Originally self-released in the early '70s and largely forgotten—even in Batiste’s hometown of New Orleans—Goes To Africa With Love and Live at the 1971 American College Jazz Festival are stunning examples of deep, exploratory jazz from a master musician and educator.

Batiste led one of the most forward-thinking college jazz programs in America, and these recordings document his innovative work with young musicians pushing the boundaries of the genre. Restored from original sources and presented with liner notes that reflect the historical and musical significance, this release is a crucial addition to the canon of American spiritual jazz.
