Description

In the 1970s, as Zambia emerged from colonial rule, a musical revolution took root—bold, raw, and entirely its own. Known as Zamrock, this electrifying scene fused fuzzed-out psychedelic rock, garage grit, funk rhythms, South African jazz, Afrobeat, and traditional Zambian melodies into a genre like no other on the continent—or the world.

While Nigeria’s rock movement was largely supported by major label subsidiaries, Zamrock thrived independently—an authentic soundtrack to Zambia’s newly-formed identity. It was more than imitation; it was transformation. Bands like WITCH, Paul Ngozi, Amanaz, Musi-O-Tunya, and Salty Dog didn’t just borrow from Western influences—they rewired them into something uniquely Zambian.

Welcome to Zamrock! documents this brief but explosive cultural moment. The energy captured in these recordings—from 1972 to 1977—is as urgent and revolutionary as punk in the UK or hip hop in the Bronx. This compilation is a vital entry point into one of the most vibrant and under-recognized rock movements in global music history.
