The Geto Boys line-up of Willie D, Bushwick Bill, and Scarface released their breakthrough album, We Can't Be Stopped, thirty-five years ago on July 11, 1991. The current line-up released their debut album, Grip It On That Other Level, in 1989 under the name Ghetto Boys, and would rework the album under the guidance of Rick Rubin, re-releasing it as the self-titled Geto Boys in 1990. We Can't Be Stopped, featuring gritty, soulful, funk-laden production, was recorded in about six weeks, with three songs featuring all three members and each member recording three solo tracks. The release of the single "Mind Playing Tricks On Me" received national radio and video play, leading to the album's platinum certification, and there isn't a Halloween that goes by without hearing the song.
The album cover is one of the most iconic in Hip-Hop history. The photo on the cover features a graphic image of Bushwick Bill after his eye was shot out during an Everclear-fueled altercation with his girlfriend. He would later recall the incident in detail on his solo album Little Big Man.
Rap-A-Lot and Virgin Music Group are reissuing this southern H-Town classic with restored artwork and upgraded audio for the 35th Anniversary and the second release of the 40th Anniversary of Rap-A-Lot Records. The Get On Down exclusive version comes with a 32-page lyric booklet, which is only available with Get On Down limited-edition pressing.
